Sanal Edamaruku lever i exil efter att ha brutit mot Indiens hädelselagar. Han avslöjade att vattnet som droppade från en Jesustatys fötter inte var ett mirakel utan i själva verket berodde på ett läckande avlopp. Han riskerar att gripas och dömas till fängelse om han återvänder till sitt hemland. Nu kommer han till Sverige för att berätta om sina erfarenheter från den indiska rationaliströrelsen.
Den 10 mars i år reste Sanal Edamaruku, ordförande för India Rationalist Association, till Mumbai. Vatten droppade från fötterna på Jesusstatyn framför kyrkan Church of Our Lady of Velankanni i Mumbai. Kyrkans personal påstod att det var ett mirakel och hundratals människor besökte statyn för att samla detta ”heliga vatten” i flaskor och dricka av det. En TV-kanal bad Edamaruku att undersöka det påstådda miraklet som skapat så mycket uppståndelse.
Inom några minuter hittade Edamaruku den verkliga källan till vattnet. Det visade sig vara avloppsvatten från ett läckande rör. De lokala kyrkoledarna accepterade inte denna förklaring utan anmälde honom för hädelse. I Indien, där muslimer och hinduer ligger i ständig konflikt, är det olagligt att yttra sig nedsättande om religioner. Det kan leda till långa fängelsestraff. Sanal Edamaruku reser nu runt i världen för att göra människor uppmärksamma på denna inskränkning i yttrandefriheten. Föreningen Vetenskap och Folkbildning har tillsammans med Humanisterna bjudit in Edamaruku till Sverige.
– Vi är mycket glada att kunna ta emot Edamaruku i Sverige. Han bedriver ett viktigt upplysningsarbete i Indien genom att avslöja påstådda mirakel för vad de egentligen är. Han hjälper därmed intet ont anande, ofta fattiga och lidande människor att slippa bli lurade av religiösa ledare och andra som ofta tar betalt för påstådda mirakel, säger Martin Rundkvist, ordförande i föreningen Vetenskap och Folkbildning.
– Edamaruku står för mod och ärlighet. Det är två egenskaper som kan vara särskilt kostsamma att ha i starkt religiösa samhällen. Även religioner i Indien, som för många i väst nog mest ses som exotiska och harmlösa, ger upphov till stora problem för individen. Edamarukus arbete är därför mycket viktigt och hedersvärt, säger Christer Sturmark, ordförande i förbundet Humanisterna.
Sanal Edamaruku är känd över hela världen som det kritiska tänkandets försvarare och hyllas för sitt gedigna arbete med upplysning i fattiga delar av Indien. Han har tidigare bland annat utmanat en så kallad helig man i TV på att denne skulle försöka döda honom med svart magi i direktsändning (Edamaruku överlevde). Han är grundare och ordförande i Rationalist International samt ordförande i Indian Rationalist Association. Han är driver internettidningen Rationalist International och har skrivit 25 böcker och många artiklar.
